What book and cover formats do you accept?

What format do I need to upload my book's internals and cover assets in to be compatible with Books.by?

Updated over 5 months ago

Authors are able to upload PDF assets for their book's internals and their cover. Books.by accepts PDF assets in most formats and sizes.

Additionally, Books.by currently supports publishing in paperback format only, which may influence your asset selection and preparation.

Book Internals

PDF is the most common upload format. If you have already published with tools like Amazon or Ingram, you can upload these existing PDF assets to Books.by.

During the upload process, Books.by will automatically match your interior content to the closest supported size available. Should resizing be necessary, additional assistance may be required.

When preparing and exporting your PDF, we recommend:

  • Allowing a 0.125" bleed on all corners of your file

  • Aligning the 'trim size' of your book with your desired print dimensions (as Books.by will automatically detect your trim size when determining the print specifications of your book)

  • Embedding fonts in the PDF

  • Flattening layers in the PDF

Books.by currently does not accept Microsoft Word .docx files when uploading your book. But, if you do prepare your Word Document in a typeset layout and export your Word Document as a PDF, you can upload this PDF to Books.by for publishing.

Book Cover

For your cover, you can upload your assets in PDF, JPEG or PNG formats. We recommend PDF, because of the increased resolution.

Ensure your files meet these specifications for optimal quality and compatibility.

Books.by has a free CoverMaker tool which allows you to upload and assemble your book's cover in your web browser.

The CoverMaker tool can also automatically generate missing sections such as the spine, back, or front based on your book's title and additional details.

You can upload your cover in either of the following formats:

  • Upload a full spread of your cover which includes the front, back and spine in one complete image.

  • Upload individual front, back and spine images.

  • If you don't have a front, back or spine, you can choose to enable a template front, back or spine inside our CoverMaker, which will automatically create any of these sections for you using your book's title and details.
